Belwood
Known to locals as the Village by the Lake, Belwood has all the great features of cottage country without the commute. But for those who call it home, the close-knit community is a wonderful place to raise a family in a spacious rural community that embraces its natural environment, or retire lakeside in the comfort of Pine Meadows Retirement Community.
Conveniently located within fifteen minutes of Fergus, the town gathers at the hub of the Belwood Country Market, renowned for their famous butter tarts and other treasures. The Belwood Super Snax restaurant is another community treasure and a popular breakfast spot.
In every season, activity in the historic town centres on the ebb and flow of the Grand River Watershed, from the reservoir of Lake Belwood to the mighty Shand Dam, and the forests that surround the region protected by the Grand River Conservation Authority.
In the warmer months, people come here to enjoy swimming, boating, water-skiing and canoeing along the 12-km reservoir. Lake Belwood is regarded as a bountiful fishing locale and as the waters flow from the Shand Dam into the Grand River, fly-fishermen have discovered the sweet spot to cast in the cool, steady stream from Belwood to Fergus.
Belwood Lake is home to more than 300 cottages and seasonal homes, with an active Belwood Lake Cottagers Association and several privately run summer camps. Highland Pines Campground, an independently owned facility, has become a popular destination for those who want a family-friendly camping experience within two hours of the GTA. They offer seasonal and short-term camping in their full-service facility.
In winter, Belwood hosts groomed snowmobile trails that tour through the forests and across the rural landscape. Situated on the Elora-Cataract Trailway, the town is a link to the 47 km of protected natural landscapes ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.
Part of the Township of Centre Wellington, Belwood is an ideal community in any season.
