Fergus
The growing community of Fergus is a bustling town that has managed to evolve with the times without losing the essence of its small town sentiments and the values of a community rich in heritage and culture.
As part of the Township of Centre Wellington, Fergus is linked to neighbouring Belwood and Elora via the picturesque waters of the Grand River. This river is home to some of the best fly-fishing in Canada, and welcomes kayakers to try their strength against the current. But for land-lovers, the expanse of the Elora Cataract Trail offers 47km of maintained trails that connect these communities by walking or cycling, and offer travellers a quiet, natural environment to appreciate the views from rural, to town to the riverside.
Fergus was built up along both sides of the limestone cliffs and tree-lined shores of the water that weaves its way through the town, where waterfalls and light rapids gather speed and offer a daily reminder of the beauty of nature on the daily commute around town. At night, it is a colourful light show for those who enjoy an evening walk.
The limestone geography is reflected in the heritage buildings of the historic downtown and the neighbourhoods that surround it. Downtown Fergus continues to be a gathering place for unique local shopping, services and community gatherings, as the heart of the town. Home to a newly renovated Carnegie Library, the Fergus Grand Theatre and the beautifully maintained gardens of areas such as Templin Gardens, the view of St. Andrew Street to the view of the river that flows beside it is inherent in the character of the town. On some summer afternoons, you can hear bagpipes playing along the walking bridge that connects the main street to the historic Fergus Marketplace.
Proudly embracing it’s Scottish roots and the Canadian history that abounds here, Fergus is home to the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, an annual tradition that draws an international crowd to three days of music, culture and sport. Agricultural history is also celebrated here with the Fergus Fall Fair. And on any given night you’ll find live music, theatre or events in venues around town that draw in the local crowds and welcome in new friends.
The pulse of this community is youthful, no matter the age of those who take part. Sport is embedded in the culture of the town. With the modernized Centre Wellington Sportsplex, the Fergus Curling Club, which is the oldest continuously running curling club in Ontario, and the numerous sports fields maintained for various sports leagues, there is something for everyone. One of the most active locations in town is the newly expanded Victoria Park Seniors Centre.
Fergus is a town designed to grow with carefully planned neighbourhoods and greenspaces, where heritage is respected and growth is anticipated. Minutes north of Guelph and connected by nature to neighbouring communities, everything you need is here and anything you want is close by.
